Roofing Terminology

R_F_75603 (18)It is obvious that a house will lose its significance if it does not have a roof or if the roof is not functional because it needs to be repaired. It is for this reason that people will often contact roofers at the earliest opportunity whenever they discover that their roofs need to be replaced or repaired.  When you engage a professional roofer, they will usually take time to explain to you what needs to be done as well as the resultant cost before they can begin working on your roof.  Unfortunately, roofers will often use roofing jargon that you will leave you guessing what it is that they are talking about.

It is therefore important that you take some time to equip yourself with the basic roofing terminology, as this will help you to understand the roofer’s explanations.  There are so many terms that roofers use hence this article will only examine common as it cannot exhaust the entire glossary of roofing terminology. One of the common terms that a roofer will use is the ridge line that refers to the line that is found at the apex of your roof. These go hand in hand with ridge tiles that sit over the ridge line and are usually fixed using mortar. This helps to prevent the tiles from falling. The Ridge tiles are usually half round even though you can find other designs and types.

The other common roofing terminology that you need to know is hipped roof that refers to the kind of roof whose two sides usually meet at an angle that is referred to as a hip. Consequently, the initial layer of tiles that are fit over the hip are referred to as hip tiles. These hip tiles are also used along the ridge line. Another common roofing terminology that you need to know is roof valley. Valleys refer to the meeting point of two sides of the roof. Unlike the hip that are located at the external corner, valleys are internal and can be made from various materials. Even then, fiber glass is common for lead valleys.

R_F_75603Dormers is another word that roofers commonly use and this refers to the protruding part of the roof and are popular for houses whose lofts have been converted.  Other basic roofing terms that are used by roofers include oriented strand board (OSB), penetrations, rafter, flashing, louvers and frieze board.  Oriented Strand Board are roof deck panels comprising narrow bits of wood crosswire in layers and installed lengthwise that are bound by glue.  Penetrations refer to pipes, vents, chimney and stacks penetrating through the roof deck. On the other hand, rafters are the structural member where sheathing is nailed. Frieze boards are the board at the top of the side of the house that form a corner with soffit. Finally, flashings refer to the materials that are used at the junction of separate planes on a roof to prevent leakage. In summary, there are various terminologies that are used by roofers that you too can understand so that you are able to understand the explanations offered by roofers whenever you engage them to work for you.
